This Month’s Wellness Spotlight

Ashwagandha: A Journey Through Time

Every month, RL’s Wellness Journey slows down to explore one botanical in depth — where it comes from, why it still matters, and the everyday rituals that let you actually use it. This month, we’re unpacking ashwagandha benefits, from ancient ceremony to your nightstand.

Why We’re Doing This Every Month

Most skincare marketing tells you what an ingredient does in one sentence and moves on. We wanted something slower: a monthly series that actually sits with one botanical or essential oil long enough to understand where it came from, how people have used it across centuries, and how it shows up in a modern self-care routine. Ashwagandha felt like the right place to start, since it’s an ingredient with thousands of years of history behind a single, familiar bottle.

A Root Worth Ceremony

Long before it had a shelf in a wellness aisle, ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) was a root gathered with intention. In early Vedic communities, it was worked into restorative tonics and offered in rituals meant to steady the body and settle the mind before rest — less a supplement, more a small act of care passed between generations.

Written Into the Texts

As Ayurvedic medicine matured into a formal practice, scholars began recording what generations had already known by feel. Ashwagandha was classified as a rasayana — a rejuvenative meant to support resilience over a lifetime, not just relieve a single bad week. That written record is a big part of why the plant is still being studied today, including ongoing modern research into ashwagandha’s potential effects on stress and sleep.

Today — Modern Wellness

From Ancient Root to Everyday Ritual

Now ashwagandha shows up in oils, lotions, teas, and bedtime rituals as one of the most talked-about adaptogens in modern self-care. The form has changed — the reason people reach for it really hasn’t: something grounding to lean on when the day has been a lot.

Ways You Never Thought to Use It

Most people know ashwagandha as a capsule or a powder stirred into a smoothie. It’s far more versatile than that — here are a few ways to work it into your routine that have nothing to do with a pill bottle. As always, patch-test any new blend and check with a healthcare provider before adding a new supplement to your routine, especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.

  1. Warm bedtime tonic. Whisk a small amount of ashwagandha powder into warm milk (dairy or oat) with a touch of honey and cinnamon — a modern take on the traditional golden milk, sipped an hour before bed.
  2. Scalp massage oil. Blend a few drops of ashwagandha-infused oil into jojoba or coconut oil and massage into the scalp before washing. Ten quiet minutes, and your hair routine becomes a small ritual.
  3. Post-workout bath soak. Add ashwagandha oil to Epsom salts for a warm soak that pairs the muscle-relaxing benefits of magnesium with a grounding, earthy scent.
  4. Calming pillow mist. Combine a few drops with lavender essential oil and water in a small spray bottle for a bedtime mist that signals to your body it’s time to wind down.
  5. Grounding body butter. Stir a drop or two into an unscented lotion or body butter for a nightly hand or foot massage — a two-minute ritual that bookends the day.
  6. A “worry less” desk ritual. Keep a small rollerball blend at your desk for a mid-afternoon pulse-point moment when the day starts to feel like a lot.

Bringing It Into Your RL Organics Routine

If this is your first time working with ashwagandha, start small and simple: a bedtime tonic or a scalp massage oil are the easiest entry points before building out a full rotation. Pair it with one of our handcrafted soaps or body scrubs for a grounding evening ritual, or explore the botanical elixirs in our shop for a ready-made blend.
